Interview with Jin from Contradiction of Sorts

Welcome to the second installment of my creator interview series! (Which, by the way, still needs a catchy name – leave suggestions in the comments if you have any.) Today, I am interviewing the lovely Jin Chu-Ferrer of Contradiction of Sorts. I came across her beautiful Instagram account about five months ago and fell in love with the imaginative way in which she documents her and her husband’s travels. Instagram is brimming with beautiful travel accounts these days, but Jin’s style is unique and recognizable (a rare feat!) The whimsical, fairy tale nature of her photography captures the most magical part of traveling, while telling a story you can’t get enough of. Read on to learn more about Jin!

Who or what inspires you to travel?
The Travel Channel

What are you currently reading/watching?

Catching up on New Girl!

How long did it take you to build up your following, and what do you wish you’d done differently?

Since I’ve hit the road a year ago. I do wish, early on, that I had taken the time to better curate my feed.

What equipment do you use for capturing your travels?
iPhone 6 and Canon 5DMIII

How did you transition from a traditional job to what you’re doing now?

I simply just quit my day job! It got to the point where the ‘What If’s” could not be ignored any longer. So I set aside some money and banked on a lot of luck. Transitioning into Travel Photography was a smooth process, as I’ve done Lifestyle Photography for many years prior, and it’s now currently funding part of my world travels.

What is the soundtrack to your travels?

Relax, Take It Easy by Mika

Who are your favorite Instagrammers at the moment?
@helloemilie, @lilyrose, @dylanasuarez

Can you name one place you’ve traveled that surprised you the most, and tell us why?

Iceland! I honestly thought it would be another “one with nature” trip. It is, essentially, and so much more! The landscapes here are incredibly cinematic and unreal, changing drastically the further you drive along the Ring Road. From bubbling geothermal hot springs to fields of purple lupines to moss-covered lava hills to massive ice glaciers to black sand beaches to majestic waterfalls. It’s hard to believe that all those sceneries are in ONE tiny country! A mind-blowing treat for the senses!

What is your favorite quote about traveling?

“Forgive me for not being all there, my mind has found a place called elsewhere.”

You have such a unique editing style, and it’s easy to tell which beautiful photos are yours! What’s your editing process like?

Ah, this editing thing. It’s a hate/love relationship, really. Right now I’m into the film look and in constant experimentation mode to achieve an updated version of that style. It’s a lengthy, messy process. I’m almost never happy with the final result and end up just settling.

One piece of advice you’d give to an aspiring traveling entrepreneur. Go!

Be authentic! You do you and the good karma will come.

Do you have any trip planning tools or packing tips?
Fave packing tip: Minimal is best! Bring 2 of every clothing item and make sure the pieces are easily mixed, matched and layered for any given situation.

What are two things new bloggers should be doing but probably aren’t?
Network often and kindly support one another! Can’t receive love if you don’t give love.

What is your favorite place in the whole wide world?
That’s a hard question! So many faves! But obviously Iceland def tops that long list!

Where to next?
Cuba and Mexico

  7. Now I have another Instagram account to follow, her style really is gorgeous. But, I am dubious about that Hoi An shot with no people in it, that was one of the most tourist filled cities I have ever been to! How do you get shots with no people in them in super crowded locations? I feel like my travel photos would improve dramatically if I could figure this out.

    1. Ha! Great question – you’ll have to ask Jin about that one (I have a feeling it involved some really early mornings). I’m never dedicated enough to find out either!

  8. What you’re doing is great! I’m looking forward to knowing more travel bloggers through your blog, Sierra!
