Interview with Ashley & Carolyn of The Lazy Travelers

For the first interview in this series (which I am so jazzed about!) I wanted to feature Ashley and Carolyn from The Lazy Travelers, a pair of transatlantic besties who live many, many miles apart and manage to run a thriving blog together! Their story is unique and so are their photos. One of my favorite things about their Instagram account is feeling like I’m genuinely getting two perspectives at once. It’s rare to find a pair with two distinct voices who also have a gift for creating cohesive content like these ladies do. Read on to learn more about them!

Who or what inspires you to travel?
Pretty much everything! Books we’re reading, TV shows we’re watching, Instagrammers we’re currently stalking… we’re constantly adding new destinations to our already very, very lengthy bucket list.

What are you currently reading/watching?
We’re not reading nearly as much as we should these days, although Ashley consults Where Chefs Eat almost weekly at this point, and Carolyn can’t get enough of Planet Earth II.

What equipment do you use for capturing your travels?
We both have Canon DSLRs we love, but more often than not, we’re whipping out our iPhone 7s.

How did you two meet, and what inspired you to start your blog together?
This is a long story meant to be shared over lots of wine, but the short of it is: we met in middle school and have been best friends ever since. We’ve each lived separately in the US and Europe, but had a few solid years where we overlapped in NYC, living on the Upper East Side and working for the same Fashion/Entertainment PR firm. We weren’t loving our daily life (and our MASSIVE lack of work/life balance), so we started scheming. When our super well-thought out plan to flee the country and start a pizza stand for drunk Irish people in Dublin was shot down by Ashley’s husband, we bought the domain for The Lazy Travelers instead.

What is the soundtrack to your travels?
It really depends. Ashley has a toddler, so… currently, it’s Moana.

Who are your favorite Instagrammers at the moment?
Ashley loves finding some London inspirations from @jessonthames and @jess_inlondon, as well as @londonispink. Carolyn is currently dreaming of a beach vacation, so @coastal_living has been her go-to. Plus, we love following up on the animals in one of our favorite destinations, @sabisabireserve, where we visited last spring!

Can you name one place you’ve traveled that surprised you the most, and tell us why?
We knew we’d love San Francisco, but we both left feeling like we could definitely live there one day. We were more surprised to hear that our husbands had the opposite feeling after the exact same trip — goes to show everyone can have a totally different reaction to a place!

One piece of advice you’d give to an aspiring traveler. Go!
Probably just that: go! You’re always going to have excuses and reasons to stay home, but just book the ticket. The rest will fall into place.

Do you have any trip planning tools or packing tips?
We don’t really do too much advanced planning — we obviously book our airfare and accommodations, but we prefer to let everything else fall into place. As for packing, we’ve finally accepted that we’ll just never be pros.

What is one thing you have learned about each other while traveling?
We’ve learned that it’s really, really lucky that we’re such compatible travelers. We’ve found over the years that just because someone is a dear friend, that doesn’t mean they make a great travel companion.

What is your favorite place in the whole wide world?
We have many, and Paris means so much to us individually. But together, our first safari in South Africa will always rank near the top.
Where to next?
Carolyn has Disney, LA, and San Francisco, and a family vacation to Ireland in her near future, and Ashley is heading to Stockholm and Malta this spring. We have a few things lined up for the summer, too, but you’ll have to wait and see!

A huge thank you to you both for sharing your stories and beautiful photography with us!
Can’t wait to see where you’re headed next!

  1. Thanks for sharing this story! Hearing about their back story makes me want to bug my long distance bestie into writing my blog with me. Like the LT, my bestie lives in the US and I’m in Australia, we met in high school, and have traveled to many countries together (our favorite was definitely Italy though). Friends you can travel with are worth their weight in gold 🙂

    1. Right?! Me too! I can imagine how much fun it is to run a blog with your best friend.
Italy is probably my favorite country to visit too – which city was your fave?
Having good friends that you also enjoy traveling the world with is certainly a treasure! I have a few of them myself and always feel so lucky that I’ve gotten to have such fun experiences with them (and not wanted to strangle them afterwards either! Bonus! Ha.)

    1. Aren’t they gorgeous? Definitely check out their Instagram account for more! They post some real gems 🙂 Thanks for reading Marga!

  2. Such gorgeous photos! Also love that they love San Francisco—I used to live there! Great city. 🙂

    1. I totally agree! They’re amazing at capturing beautiful moments in their cities as well as on their travels! Thanks for reading, Lauren 🙂

    1. Thanks for reading, Silvia! Off to check out your blog 🙂 Stockholm is definitely high on my bucket list! (I’m headed to Copenhagen soon, so I’ll be close but not quite there!)

  3. The story behind the creation of The Lazy Travelers gave me a good laugh. I always love hearing how and why bloggers started blogging. Good read overall!
