Traveling London alone and looking for some fun things to do?
Here are the best 10 things to do in London on your own!
As a frequent solo traveler, I am quite used to experiencing lots of things alone – in fact, I often prefer it! (More on that in a future post, because people always ask.) I’ve visited London three times now, and have explored the city both with friends and on my own. After spending lots of time seeing all the city has to offer, I’ve come up with this list of recommendations for 10 things to do in London on your own!
If you’re planning on traveling London alone and looking for some unique, off-the-beaten-path things to do in London by yourself, don’t fret. There are so many fun things to see, do and eat without feeling like you’re some awkward loner. I promise!
Without further ado, let’s dive in!

10 Things To Do In London On Your Own
With endless options for any traveler, London truly has something for everyone! Depending on your preferences, budget, and comfort level, you can find lots of options that will both keep you busy and entertained during your solo trip.
Here are just a few of my favorite things to do in London on your own (and a couple that are on my bucket list for my next visit). I’m definitely an introvert, which you’ll probably be able to tell from my choices below. I love finding things to do that are fun, unique, and also don’t require too much human interaction. Fellow introverts, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.
If you have any additions (like where to go out dancing while traveling solo – something I will likely never have a good recommendation for!), drop them in the comments at the end of this post – I’d love to hear about your favorite things to do in London by yourself and add more great ideas to this list.

Take in a movie at the luxurious Electric Cinema
Location: 191 Portobello Road in Notting Hill or 64-66 Redchurch St in Shoreditch
Hours: 9am-8:30pm (Monday through Saturday), 10am-8:30pm (Sunday)
Cost: Β£8 to Β£45, depending on your age and seating choice. Cheapest day to visit is Monday. More info here.
Electric Cinema is the movie theater of dreams and one of the oldest working cinemas in Britain! Owned and operated by Soho House, it feels both lush and exclusive. Tickets start around the same price as a normal movie ticket in London, but with major bonus fancy vibes.
Tired of walking around the city and ready to kick your feet up? I have a solution for you: go to Electric Cinema and watch a movie while sipping champagne, laying on a velvet bed, wrapped in a cashmere blanket. Not even kidding. Beds pictured below. You can thank me later.
Going to the movies is one of the best things to do in London by yourself because no one will look at you funny for going alone, and seeing a movie is just as fun on your own as it is with a group! Add in an element of luxury at Electric Cinema for a truly unique movie-going experience.
Want a snack?
The auditorium and bar open before each showing, serving wine, beer, champagne and super yummy snacks you can bring into the movie with you. If you need a real meal, the Electric Diner, which is right next to the theater, serves up a full menu of delicious food and drink, including all day breakfast (hello, yes please).
Visit a traditional Hindu temple for a break from the hustle and bustle
Location: 105-119 Brentfield Rd, London NW10 8LD
Hours: 9am-6pm (Monday through Sunday)
Cost: FREE
The BAPSΒ Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is a beautiful authentic Hindu temple that takes less than an hour to get to from central London. Whether or not you consider yourself a religious or spiritual person, the architecture and feeling of this sacred space is something special and worth visiting.
The Mandir is strikingly white and clean, built entirely according to ancient Vedic architectural texts – using no structural steel whatsoever. It is surrounded by gorgeous gardens and grounds, and completely free to visit.
Visiting the Mandir is one of the best things to do in London by yourself because it is one of those activities where solitude only enhances the experience. You can truly immerse yourself in the sights and sounds around you and appreciate the beauty of the temple in complete peace.
See breathtaking views of London for free from Duck & Waffle
Location: Heron Tower, 110 Bishopsgate, London
Hours: Open 24 hours – say what?!
Cost: FREE (unless, of course, you succumb to their brunch menu)
Bye bye, London Eye. There’s a time and place for touristy spots, but if you’re on a mission to make your solo trip to London as unique (and budget-friendly) as possible, skip the line and cost of the London Eye and opt for a free view of the city from the towering Duck & Waffle restaurant instead.
I mean, just look at it!
Unless you’re afraid of heights, in which case, look away quickly and pretend you’re not on a towering hunk of metal in the sky!
While this is a fun thing to do with friends, it’s also one of the easiest things to do in London by yourself because you can zip up, have a quick coffee and take in the view, and zip back down, all without having to wait for a table or deal with those pesky reservations!
Word to the wise:
If you plan to actually eat here, be prepared to drop some coin. They have a delicious-looking menu, but it’s ££££ for most dishes. You can always do what I did and simply go up to grab a coffee or tea in the bar area and admire the gorgeous views if you’re on a budget!
We did make reservations (which I highly recommend) and initially planned on eating brunch at Duck & Waffle, but didn’t adequately prepare by reviewing the menu (and pricing) first. Thankfully, the staff didn’t mind at all that we ended up just getting coffee and gawking at the views out the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Take a stroll around Notting Hill
Location: My favorite areas are Notting Hill Gate, Kensington Park Road, St Luke’s Mews, Portobello Market
Hours: Great for a wander at any time of day, but I’d recommend going early Saturday or Sunday morning to try and avoid crowds but still get the Portobello Market experience. If you don’t care about the market, anytime is fine!
Cost: FREE (as long as you avert your eyes from all the cute shops and bakeries)
ClichΓ© or not, I think Notting Hill is probably my favorite area to explore in London. It’s one of the most affluent areas in the city, which is evident in the houses and shops dotting the streets. It’s absolutely beautiful and one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in the city. If you’re looking things to do in London on your own, Notting Hill definitely has lots of different options!
What to do:
If you’re a movie buff looking for things to do in London on your own, you can do a self-guided walking tour of filming locations from the films Notting Hill and Love Actually. If you want some good food or a day of shopping, Notting Hill has got you covered. And if you’re looking for Instagram-worthy spots, you’re definitely in the right place.
Taking a self-guided (or group!) walking tour is one of the best things to do in London by yourself, because you can either take your time and go at your own pace if you’re solo, or enjoy making some new friends with similar interests on a group tour! Win/win.
Getting hungry?
I’ll be doing a full London guide soon, but for now, two restaurant recommendations for you in Notting Hill:
- Grab a pint and some fish and chips at the Cock & Bottle (17 Needham Rd), which is a cozy traditional pub with a modern twist. Their fish and chips are amazing, and it has a neighborhood local vibe mixed with cozy library bar.
- Get the lemon ricotta pancakes from Granger & Co (175 Westbourne Grove). So. Good.
Have afternoon tea on a vintage double-decker bus
Location: Departs from 8 Northumberland Avenue near Trafalgar Square or Victoria Coach Station
Hours: Five tours daily from 12pm-5pm
Cost: Β£45+ per adult (you may need to find a buddy to do this one with, but I know some who have done it alone!)
I wrote a full blog post about my experience on Brigit’s Afternoon Tea bus tour, and let me just say – this is probably the cutest thing I’ve ever done in London. I knew it would be adorable, but I didn’t realize just how adorable.
Experiencing afternoon tea aboard a vintage Routemaster double-decker bus is something I didn’t realize was on my bucket list until I checked it off. It was so much fun! You get a full afternoon tea accompanied with an array of tasty sandwiches, delicious cakes and pastries.
The bus takes you around Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Hyde Park, The Royal Albert Hall, Marble Arch and lots of other iconic London spots.
Not a fan of tea? They also have a Gin Lover’s bus tour! (Yeah, you heard that right.)
On A Budget?
If you’re looking for a way to experience London via double-decker bus but still save some money, hop on the 11 public bus! It takes you around the city and past lots of beautiful sights (including Belgravia, Westminster Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament) for just Β£1.50. Be sure you pick up an Oyster card beforehand though, as buses don’t accept cash.
After you finish your budget bus tour, take a short walk from the last stop on the route and head over to Spitalfields market, Brick Lane and trendy Shoreditch. All three are areas full of bustling coffee shops, street artΒ and street food stalls, perfect if you’re a solo traveler looking for things to do in London by yourself.
Another fun follow-up activity is to wander through quirky, colorful Neal’s Yard and check out all the shops!
Go for a swim in the Zaha Hadid Olympic Pool
Location: London Aquatic Centre (18 Stafford Terrace)
Hours: 6am-10:30pm
Cost:Β Β£4.95 for adults, Β£2.50 for children (children 3 and under are free!)
Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid designed the London Aquatic Centre for the 2012 Olympics, which were held in London. She was inspired by the fluid nature and geometry of water in motion, and both the inside and outside of the Aquatic Centre reflects her vision beautifully. Most tourists have no idea that this Olympic pool is open to the public, so it’s a great spot to get away from the crowds.
The facility has three swimming pools. The competition pool is the largest at 50 meters long, the equivalent of four London double-decker buses, and 3 meters deep!
If you’re traveling London alone and want a good solo activity that will also offer a nice break from the hectic atmosphere of wandering city streets, go take a swim! It’s the perfect thing to do in London by yourself.
Browse through some magical bookstores
Location: Daunt Books (84 Marylebone High St) or LibreriaΒ (65 Hanbury St)
Hours: Daunt Books (9am-7:30pm, closing at 6pm on Sundays), Libreria (10am-6/8/11pm, depending on day)
Cost: FREE (unless you get swept away and buy 10 books, obviously!)
London is full of charming bookstores, but here are two of my top recommendations:
Daunt Books (pictured above) has multiple locations, but their Marylebone shop is especially dreamy, and definitely warrants a visit. They boast a massive collection of travel-related tomes, three levels, and an exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly staff. I could have stayed at Daunt for hours on end, thumbing through books until it got dark. Highly recommend.
Browsing through a charming bookstore is one of the best things to do in London by yourself – no one to rush you through your massive stack of books you want to thumb through, and no one to judge your excessive book-buying!
Libreria is another beautiful bookstore and one I have on my own London bucket list for my next visit! It is a welcoming, all-about-books type of place (don’t expect to find wifi and coffee here). With cozy nooks and plenty of seating, Libreria encourages people to pull up a chair and stay awhile, reading and making conversation.
Located in Spitalfields, Libreria’s bright yellow shelves seem to stretch as far as the eye can see. They even have a section devoted to βenchantment for the disenchanted.” I mean, if that doesn’t warm your stone-cold heart, I don’t know what will!
Visit one of London’s many free museums!
Location: All over the city! (See below for some specific suggestions.)
Hours: Check each museum’s hours on their website.
Cost: FREE
I know, I know. A predictable suggestion. But hear me out. London boasts some of the world’s most stunning museums, and even if you’re not usually A Museum Person (like me), you’ll still find the beauty and value in these incredible institutions. Exploring these amazing museums is one of my top favorite things to do in London on my own.
A few of my personal favorites: the British MuseumΒ (Great Russell St, Bloomsbury), Tate Modern (Bankside), and Tate Britain (Millbank). Wandering through a museum is even more enjoyable as a solo traveler, because you’re never worried about taking too long or going too quickly through exhibits. Total freedom!
Wander (and eat!) your way through London’s best markets
Location: All over the city, but my favorite is Borough Market (8 Southwark St)
Hours: 10am-5pm (Mon-Fri), 8am-5pm (Sat), closed Sundays
Cost: Free admission, but expect to spend at least Β£20 if you want to try a few things
I could write a whole blog post on London’s markets alone (and I just might one of these days)! It would probably read more like a love letter, because I am legitimately obsessed with this city’s market offerings. There’s a market for just about everyone – no matter what you’re looking for, London’s got a market for it.
When you’re looking for things to do in London by yourself, put markets at the top of your list! You can aimlessly wander through them when you’re traveling solo, taking in all the sights and smells (and tastes!) your little heart could possibly desire.
So Many Markets, So Little Time
The two markets I’ve spent the most time at are Borough Market and Camden Market. Borough Market is all about food, and holy heck, there’s a LOT of it. So many delicious items to try, you could spend all week there and still not make it through every stall!
I highly recommend doing your research beforehand and making a list of stalls you want to make it to. Otherwise, when you get there, I can guarantee that the yummy smells, hoards of people, and abundance of stalls will overwhelm you! Some of my favorites: Brandisa, Bread Ahead, Kappacasein, Gujarati Rasoi, and Boston Sausages.
London markets are a really fun option if you’re a solo traveler looking for things to do in London on your own, because they are so busy you’d probably end up losing your travel partner anyways. For a longer list of London’s best markets, check out Visit London’s guide.
Take a river boat cruise along the Thames
Location: Departing from various locations along the river – check with individual tour operators for more details.
Hours: Varies – lots of cruises available both day and night.
Cost: Varies by company, check out some options below!
Looking for something low-effort that will make you feel like a super productive traveler? A river boat cruise is the perfect option! You get to see a lot of the city from the comfort of your seat and get a great overview of London from the River Thames, and it’s also an easy way to pinpoint spots you’d like to return to on foot for a closer look.
Cruising on the river is one of the nicest, lazy afternoon things to do in London by yourself, and there are always plenty of other solo travelers, so you won’t feel weird doing it without a friend!
For more information on exploring London from the River Thames, check out this guide from Visit London.
Β Thanks for reading!
I hope this post was helpful if you’re searching for things to do in London by yourself!
My hope is that posts like this one encourage you to embrace the freedom and fun that can come from solo travel, wherever you may be headed. I have learned so much from all of my experiences traveling alone, and love seeing other people getting out there and exploring the world too!
As always, I’m more than happy to answer questions about solo travel in the comments down below, over on Twitter, or via email. It can be such an enriching, educational and transformative experience if you just embrace it!
Happy travels!

Lots of great ideas. I used to live steps away from Daunt but have yet to visit Liberia, on the list!
I recently moved to London and so appreciate this post! Daunt Books is one of my favorite places, and I’ve definitely enjoyed solo trips to the V&A and Natural History museums. Looking forward to checking out your other recommendations π
Damn, those bookstores look amazing! π Very nice article and clichΓ© or not – Notting Hill and Portobello ARE the sweetest places in London π
I love the idea of having tea on the double decker bus. I definitely need to add this to my list next time I am in London. When I wandered through London alone, I really enjoyed seeing a show in the West End. I bought my ticket to Stomp at the box office for the same day performance at half price.
London is my favourite city. I’ve been more than 10 times and still haven’t done any of these things bar the last 3. Now I need to return again!! I feel like every time I go I do the same things so now you’ve made me see it with new eyes
So many great sites beyond the usual ones… thanks for the inspiration…
Great List π
The daunts bookstore looks amazing! I have recently started reading books, and now nobody can stop me to explore these awesome bookstores. Also, the luxury movie hall is now on my to do list. Thanks π
This is so great because New Orleans will be getting a direct flight to London Soon!!!
Aw man, I just got back from London. Wish I had known about these! They have a Hindu temple like this by LA as well that I visited. It’s really a nice break from the city!! I love all of your suggestions though. Definitely pinning this for when I go back to London and sharing it with a friend who’s moving there!
This is an awesome list!! I’ve wanted to do London solo – but there was sooo much to do it was overwhelming. That cinemas looks AMAZING and OMG WAFFLES. I’m sold! Must visit here soon. Thanks for this great list you’ve put together.
I would love to try these donuts! London is a city where you can do so many things on your own I think. I always found stuff to do, especially visiting the countless museums and galleries.
London is amazing and I will be visiting there soon. This post was so helpful. Thanks!
I really love the Notting Hill area – going for a stroll there is always a great idea!
I love your London series!!! They’re all so informative. Please keep them comin’! π
Thanks so much Mariann! π More on the way!
Ohhh what a brilliant list. That fancy cinema looks like the BEST place to watch a movie. xx
I love the list and as a Londoner I approve hehe. There are a few things on there that I haven’t done yet, but added them to my “gotta do soon” list π
Wow I love these ideas! Afternoon tea on a vintage double decker bus?! I’m not even the biggest fan of tea and I would love to do that!
It’s seriously so fun!
What a fantastic list! I really, really, really want to go to that cinema though!
It’s SO nice!
This is legit the best post I’ve read on things to do in London! Such awesome and unique ideas, thank you! Bookmarking for any future trips to the city.
So nice to hear, thank you Karlie!
Ooh this is a great list! Iβve done quite a few, but thereβs always more to try one London – the bookshops and a return trip to Borough Market are definitely on my list for next time
All these things I love … except the Mandi which is on my list of things to do in 2018!
I’m going to London in a couple of weeks so definitely going to check out a few of these!
This is an amazing list!! London is definitely one of those cities that feels super overwhelming at first, but then you realise that everyone is in such a rush that they couldn’t care less if you’re on your own or not, and that makes it a perrrfect place for a solo break. I’m also a huge fan of going into bookshops when I’m on my own – could easily spend a whole afternoon in some of the boutiquey ones in London. Also had a little laugh at your Duck and Waffle situation – going to a restaurant without knowing how much it costs and having to feign not being hungry any more and just getting a coffee is an all too regular occurrence for me…!
YES! 100% spot on. Everyone in London is so busy, they don’t have time to care whether you’re traveling alone or not. I’m glad the Duck & Waffle surprise gave you a laugh, ha! It was a bit awkward, not gonna lie…
Such great ideas and beautiful photography! Cant wait to visit London Again!
This is a fantastic list! The only thing I might add is reading in one of the lovely parks (like the secret Pergola and hill gardens near Hampstead Heath. Once you’ve visited those gorgeous book shops, you’d probably have something good to read and relax with!!
I’ve lived in London for years, but I had never heard of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir! It looks loooovely!
Fantastic addition! I love London’s parks. Thank you Josy!
I’ve been to London multiple times but those bookstores and foodie places just went on my travel list. I’ll be back in November and will need these tips. Thank you!
I’ll be moving to London in a few months, so I will definitely have to use this list for ideas! I love checking out the markets in London and Notting Hill is my favourite area to explore. I never even knew about the Hindu Temple! Looks so cool, and I’ll definitely need to check it out!
I haven’t been to London since I was a kid and my family swapped houses with a family in London, but I’m dying to go back! It’s great to know that if I go solo I’ll still be able to find lots of things to do (that aren’t too expensive!).
London was my first alone trip abroad, at the age of 16 in 1986. I did visit bookstores and museums but I did not go to any Hindu Temple. I also did a sightseeing tour by bus which is most likely much more expensive nowadays. London is still one of my favourite cities in Europe, always nice to read about it.
Very insightful and lots of tips!
SO many unique and amazing ideas! I’ve been to London multiple times and haven’t done more than the markets and museums – keeping this post saved for sure! Thank you.
Awesome, thanks Aimee! Glad it was helpful.
What an inspiring post, it all looks so enticing!
Thanks for reading, Ali!
Awesome list! I’ve added Electric Cinema to my London board.
I’ve been eyeing the Afternoon Tea Bus for a few months, do you think it’s fat girl friendly? I’d be heartbroken if I got there and didn’t fit.
GREAT question. I always wonder the same thing when I sign up for an attraction or am trying to plan out my travel. Thankfully these old vintage buses have benches and little tables, not individual seats, so if you go with just one other person (or by yourself) you get the whole bench to yourself with no restrictions on your hips or anything. I don’t remember feeling uncomfortable with the belly to table distance (and I’m not small), but if you have a little extra belly and are worried about being able to fit comfortably in that space, I’d get in touch with Brigit’s and ask them about the exact dimensions so you can figure out if it will work for your body!
I’m so glad you brought this up, seriously. Worrying about whether or not we’ll fit on things is so frustrating, but something so many of us deal with. I definitely want to do more posts on fat girl friendly travel and how I do it, because I certainly have my fair share of challenges.
Thank you for the great suggestions! Planning my summer visit to London right now. Been there many, many times, so I’m browsing for new ideas π Libreria Bookshop looks beautiful and will definitely check out the view from Duck & Waffle. Thanks for sharing!
Ooh, perfect! I hope this gave you some good new ideas π Libreria and Daunt both are gorgeous. And Duck & Waffle is a must! Have a wonderful trip to London!
London Walks – cheap, entertaining and easy.
Ooh! I’ll have to try one of those next time I’m in London! Thanks Patti π
Woooooow London is gorgeous! These photos were much cooler than the stereotype photos from the city! And that movie theatre!! Wow. I donβt think Iβd want to leave. Great article and Iβll defin come back to it when I make it over to London.
Thanks so much! So happy to hear it gave you some inspiration for your next trip π
Such beautiful photos, and great ideas to do! I’d love to visit Tate Britain museum, looks gorgeous. And of course try some of those delicious pastries π
Thanks so much! Tate Britain is definitely one of my favorites. The building alone is a work of art. Such a gorgeous place.
Your photos are amazing! You make London look so beautiful. I really am digging that theater. I have never seen such fancy chairs! Thanks for this list and I will save for when I am there.
Thank you so much Michelle! Electric Cinema really is something special. Such a fun, luxe experience!
Oh so many inspirational things! Thank you for giving me so many cool ideas π
Thanks for reading! Glad to give you some new ideas! π
Omg London has so many hidden gems! I’m also always impressed by solo travellers. I actually hate travelling solo haha so the idea that someone could adore it I’m like damn good on Ya!
Haha! It’s not for everyone. I think it’s a really valuable way to travel, but if you dislike being alone and doing things solo while traveling, it can be a bit tough, I’m sure!
London remains one of my
Favorite cities in all the world. Great list!!
Hard not to love, right? It’s definitely one of my top faves too π Thanks for reading!
Stunning photography! This looks like it was such a fun trip!
Thanks Loretta! It really was π
What a fun list – that temple looks like it’s in Bangkok, not London and the luxury cinema looks awesome! I really need to go back to London – it’s been over 10 years!
I know, right? I never even knew the temple existed before my recent trip to London. So beautiful! The movie theatre is fantastic too π I’ve been to London three times in the past few years, and I still can’t get enough! So much to do and see there.
That’s a great list with recommendations! Having a quick 18 hour layover in London this May so might have some time do do a couple of things! thanks for sharing !
Ooh! Definitely make the most of that layover! London is the best π Hope you have a great trip!
That movie theater is so plush! I don’t think I’d want one of the beds in the front though. I would love to walk on Notting Hill and through some markets. What great experiences.
I know right?! So luxurious. I love Electric Cinema! Notting Hill is such a lovely place to wander and explore!
Awesome post with excellent ideas. I did the Thames River Cruise (well worth it) and a couple of the free museums. But you have some great options like the tea on the double decker. And I love the bookstores you have pictured! I’m bookmarking this for future travel!
Thanks for reading Lynne! I need to do a river cruise next time I go – I haven’t done one yet, but it’s on my list!
I love this list, you’ve got some great suggestions including some of my favourites. I went on the cake bus a couple of weeks ago and can’t stop recommending it to people, but now you tell me there’s a gin bus … this could be dangerous. I might never get off π
Haha! The gin lover’s tour does sound pretty fun, right?
This is such a great post and I love your gorgeous photos! Man, I wish I would have known about the afternoon tea bus tour-that looks so fun! We so enjoyed Borough Market, and ate WAY too much! Thanks for the great share!
Thanks Michelle! I’d been to London twice before this and never knew about the afternoon tea bus tour either – such a fun alternative way to see London! Borough Market is the best *drool*. My stomach is never big enough to fit everything I want to try in there!
I love the Duck and Waffle! And yes, best views on a budget. Love your other ideas, too.
Duck & Waffle is pretty incredible! A good place to sneak an amazing view without the London Eye or Shard price tag!
I was in London a few months ago. I loved Notting Hill and Bourough market as well.
It’s such a fun area, right? I always love to visit no matter times I’ve been there.
Love this London solo guide! Tea on a double decker bus that actually takes you places, yes please! Thanks for sharing:-) I really love your posts! So very helpful and gorgeous to look at too!!
Yay! Thanks so much Andele π That made my day!
Lovely ideas! Next time I am in London I will definitely go to the Electric Cinema!
It’s seriously the best. Has ruined all other movie-going experiences for me because it was so great! Ha.
This post was perfect timing, I leave for my first solo trip to London tomorrow!
Yay! Have an amazing time!
Your photos are so gorgeous! You are making me want to hop on a plane to London!
Thank you so much Andrea!
These are fantastic ideas! I especially love the afternoon tea on the double-decker bus!! Omg, so perfect for me because I am an afternoon tea fanatic haha.
And I have to say, I love your photos, you make London look so, so pretty!
Oooh, you would LOVE the afternoon tea bus tour – it’s so much fun! I’m doing a whole post on it because it was great. So keep an eye out for that. And thanks for the photo love, much appreciated π
Will be in London in July. Can’t wait to try out some of your suggestions. I tried to book a seat on the afternoon tea bus tour, but it seems that one cannot book a single ticket online. How did you go about
it?
Oh no! Did you get it to work? I updated my post to reflect that it may not be possible to book just one seat. I went with a friend and assumed it was possible to grab just one seat, I’ll check with them to be sure!
